从阴茎海绵体纤维膜的内表面以及中隔两侧发出许多条带或索状结构，这些结构在海绵体内部向各个方向延伸，将其分隔成若干独立的腔室（海绵体腔隙），使整体结构呈海绵状外观。
构成小梁的纤维成分在海绵体周缘处比中央部更为粗大坚韧；后部亦较前部为厚。相反，间隙（海绵状腔隙）在中央部比周缘处更为宽大，其长轴沿横向走行。腔隙内充满血液，内衬一层扁平细胞，与静脉的内皮衬里相似。
