胶状质神经核（又称后角胶状质）是一个独立的神经核，位于Rexed第II层。它覆盖于后角头部的顶端。部分学者认为后角胶状质（第II层）本身即为后角头部的组成部分。该神经核沿脊髓后角全长纵向延伸。后角胶状质接收来自传入（一级）神经元的痛觉和温度觉感觉信息。此后，这些信息经由脊髓丘脑束依次传递至高级脑中枢，包括丘脑和初级感觉皮质。

后角胶状质还接收来自延髓中缝大核的下行传入纤维，这些纤维通过促进内源性镇痛在痛觉调制中发挥重要作用。
