平滑肌是一种不随意非横纹肌。它分为两个亚群：单元（单一）平滑肌和多元平滑肌。
- 在单元平滑肌组织中，自主神经系统支配片状或束状结构中的单个细胞，动作电位通过缝隙连接传播至邻近细胞，从而使整个肌束或肌片作为合胞体（即未分隔成独立细胞的多核细胞质团块）进行收缩。
- 多元平滑肌组织支配各个独立细胞；因此，它们允许精细控制和渐进性反应，与骨骼肌中运动单位募集的方式十分相似。
