棘状星形神经元是一种兴奋性中间神经元，主要存在于感觉皮质，尤其集中于初级躯体感觉皮质的第IV层。这类神经元具有以下特征：
- 细胞体呈星形（星状），多条树突向外放射状延伸。
- 树突上存在树突棘，即树突表面的微小突起，兴奋性突触通常在此形成。
- 以谷氨酸作为主要神经递质，因此具有兴奋性。
- 负责接收丘脑皮质投射的传入信息，并将其分配至其他皮质神经元，尤其是锥体细胞。
这些神经元对于处理由丘脑中继传入的感觉信息、并将其高效分布至皮质各区域至关重要。
