腭骨位于鼻腔后部，介于上颌骨与蝶骨翼突之间。
腭骨参与构成三个腔的壁：鼻腔的底壁和外侧壁、口腔的顶壁（硬腭）以及眼眶的底壁；并参与形成两个窝，即翼腭窝和翼突窝；以及一条裂隙，即眶下裂。
腭骨形态略似字母L，由水平部和垂直部组成，并具有三个突起——即锥突，自两部交汇处向后外侧方向伸出；以及眶突和蝶突，二者耸立于垂直部上方，之间被一深切迹——蝶腭切迹——所分隔。
