锤骨的头（capitulum mallei）是该骨的较大上端；其呈卵圆形，后方与砧骨相关节，其余部分均游离。与砧骨相关节的关节面在近中部处收窄，由上方较大部分和下方较小部分组成，两部分之间形成近似直角。在收窄处的对侧，关节面的下缘以突起的形式向外突出，称为锤骨的齿突或骨距。
