术语"大脑"是指前脑或前脑泡（prosencephalon）中由端脑发育而来的部分。
大脑或端脑由两个大脑半球组成，覆盖于间脑之上。每个大脑半球由覆盖其表面的灰质层构成，该灰质层称为大脑皮质，包绕着深部的白质及皮质下灰质核团，包括底核。
