上鼻甲是一块弯曲的骨板，从筛骨迷路内侧面伸出。它向下延伸，覆盖上鼻道，该区域是气流通过及后筛气房引流的重要部位。在上鼻甲的正上方是蝶筛隐窝，该隐窝是蝶窦向鼻腔引流的重要通道。
与中鼻甲和下鼻甲相似，上鼻甲在增大鼻腔表面积方面发挥着重要作用。这种面积的扩大有助于对吸入空气进行过滤、湿润和加温。在上部，上鼻甲与其上方的鼻腔外侧壁、鼻腔顶部以及鼻中隔上三分之一共同构成嗅区。该区域覆盖有嗅神经上皮，对嗅觉功能至关重要。
