典型椎由前部的椎体与后部的椎弓（神经弓）构成，二者共同围成椎孔。椎弓由一对椎弓根与一对椎板组成，并发出七个突起：四个关节突（上、下各二）、两个横突与一个棘突。
当相邻椎骨彼此衔接时，诸椎体形成支承头部与躯干的坚强柱体；各椎孔连续构成椎管，以保护脊髓。每对椎骨之间的两侧各形成一个椎间孔，供脊神经与血管通过。
