Anterior meningeal branch of anterior ethmoidal nerve
Ramus meningeus anterior nervi ethmoidei anterioris
- Latin synonym: Ramus meningeus anterior nervi ethmoidalis anterioris
- Related terms: Anterior meningeal branch
Definition
Anterior meningeal branch of anterior ethmoidal nerve is a branch of the anterior ethmoidal nerve, that has arisen from the nasociliary nerve. The latter is a branch of the ophthalmic (V1) division of trigeminal nerve.
Anterior ethmoidal nerve is one of the two terminal branches of nasociliary nerve. Within the orbital cavity, anterior ethmoidal nerve traverses through the anterior ethmoidal foramen in the medial wall of the orbit, thus entering the anterior cranial fossa. It is here, while it is arching anteromedially over the cribriform plate, an anterior meningeal branch of anterior ethmoidal nerve is given off that provides sensory innervation to the brain dura mater of the anterior cranial fossa, including anterior part of the falx cerebrum. Some part of the dura over the sella turcica (body of sphenoid bone) also receives sensory innervation from the anterior meningeal branch of anterior ethmoidal nerve.
After supplying the meninges, the anterior ethmoidal nerve itself, descends through a slit along the side of crista galli to enter the nasal cavity.
