Lateral occipital artery; P3 segment

Arteria occipitalis lateralis; Segmentum P3

Definition

Lateral occipital artery; P3 segment: lateral terminal branch of the posterior cerebral artery that passes to the basilar surface of the posterior part of the temporal lobe.

Note that this term ("lateral occipital artery") and definition for P3 segment is not used routinely and differs from microsurgical and angiographic approach where the P3 segment is defined as:

The P3 segment extends from the posterior edge of the lateral surface of the midbrain and ends at the point of origin of the parieto-occipital sulcus along the calcarine fissure, lying then along or inside the proximal part of the calcarine fissure. The P3 segment then includes the collicular point within the quadrigeminal cistern, which corresponds to the closest angiographic point between both PCAs in the anteroposterior view.
