Definition

The tegmentum of midbrain is a structural part between the lateral groove of midbrain and a plane passing through the cerebral aqueduct.

It is bounded anteriorly by the the cerebral peduncles and the substantia nigra, and posteriorly by the tectum of midbrain (quadrigeminal plates) and the cerebral aqueduct.

Superiorly it forms a part of the floor of the third ventricle.

Inferiorly the tegmentum of midbrain extends into the pons and is termed tegmentum of pons (posteriorly to the bulky basis pontis) and continues to the medulla oblongata (posteriorly to pyramid and inferior olivary nuclei).
