Mucosal pharyngeal space
Spatium mucosus pharyngeus
Definition
The pharyngeal mucosal space (PMS) lies just lateral and posterior to the nasopharynx and oropharynx.
Boundaries:
- Middle layer of the deep cervical fascia posteriorly and laterally.
- Cricoid cartilage inferiorly
- Base of skull superiorly
Relations:
- Retropharyngeal space posteriorly
- Parapharyngea] space laterally
Contents:
- Pharyngeal mucosa
- Lymphoid tissue of Waldeyer's ring(tonsils and adenoids)
- Minor salivary glands
- Superior and middle pharyngeal constrictor muscles
