Mucosal pharyngeal space

Spatium mucosus pharyngeus

Definition

The pharyngeal mucosal space (PMS) lies just lateral and posterior to the nasopharynx and oropharynx.

Boundaries:

  • Middle layer of the deep cervical fascia posteriorly and laterally.
  • Cricoid cartilage inferiorly
  • Base of skull superiorly

Relations:

  • Retropharyngeal space posteriorly
  • Parapharyngea] space laterally

Contents:

  • Pharyngeal mucosa
  • Lymphoid tissue of Waldeyer's ring(tonsils and adenoids)
  • Minor salivary glands
  • Superior and middle pharyngeal constrictor muscles
