Orifice of vermiform appendix

Ostium appendicis vermiformis

  • Synonym: Orifice of appendix

Definition

Antoine Micheau & Muhammad A. Javaid

The canal of the vermiform appendix is small, extends throughout the whole length of the tube, and communicates with the cecum by an orifice the orifice of vermiform appendix. The orifice is place 2-3 cm below the ileocecal opening, at the point where the three taeniae coli converge at the base of the vermiform appendix.

The orifice is usually circular or slit-like and is sometimes guarded by an appendicular fold, a semilunar valve formed by a fold of mucous membrane, but this is by no means constant.
