The epicranium refers to the soft tissue layers of the scalp covering the calvaria or the skull cap. The regions of epicranium include the frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal, and mastoid regions.

Please do not confuse the term epicranium with the pericranium, which refers to the periosteum of the skull bones.
