The retrolentiform limb of internal capsule is the portion of the internal capsule that lies posterior to the lentiform nucleus. It contains projection fibres passing between the thalamus, posterior regions of the cerebral cortex, and the pons.

Nerve fibres of the retrolentiform limb of internal capsule

An important component is formed by fibres of the posterior thalamic projection system, particularly the optic radiation, which carries visual information toward the occipital cortex. The retrolentiform limb also contains fibres connecting the pulvinar of the thalamus with the parieto-occipital cortex. In addition, descending parietopontine (from the pre-cuneus), temporopontine and occipitopontine fibres (from the cuneus and lingula) pass through this region on their way toward the pons.

Sublentiform limb of internal capsule

The retrolentiform limb should be distinguished from the sublentiform part of the internal capsule, which lies inferior to the lentiform nucleus.
