Sinuses of pulmonary trunk
Sinus trunci pulmonalis
- Related terms: Sinus of pulmonary trunk
Definition
The sinuses of the pulmonary trunk are three pouch-like dilatations located immediately distal to the pulmonary valve cusps at the root of the pulmonary artery. Each sinus is associated with one of the three pulmonary valve leaflets (anterior, left, and right leaflets):
These sinuses are analogous to the aortic sinuses (of Valsalva) but are generally less prominent. Their primary function is to facilitate valve closure by creating eddy currents that help prevent cusp adherence to the vessel wall and ensure effective leaflet coaptation.
