- Synonym: Supine
Definition
Supine position refers to the position of human body, where a person is lying face-up and the neck being in a neutral position. The arms are on the sides of the body with forearms supinated and palms facing upwards.
The supine positioning of the body allows access to thoracic, pericardial and peritoneal cavities during surgical procedures.
The supine position is opposite to the prone position, where the person is lying face-down.
