头部（或称指端）呈长椭圆形关节面，从前向后明显凸起，横向凸起程度较小，两侧略扁平；与近节指骨相关节。其掌侧面较背侧面更宽，向上延伸更远，前后径长于横径。头部两侧各有一结节，供掌指关节侧副韧带附着。背侧面宽而平坦，支撑伸肌腱；掌侧面中线处有一纵沟，供屈肌腱通过，两侧各有一关节隆起，与末端关节面相延续。
