定义
间位神经核最初出现于尾侧，表现为靠近舌下神经核吻侧端的一小群细胞，位于腹侧的舌下神经核与背外侧的迷走神经背侧运动核之间。随其向吻侧延伸，体积逐渐增大，细胞构筑亦随之发生变化。细胞以小型圆形或卵圆形为主，胞质内尼氏颗粒分布稀疏。在吻侧水平，中等大小的细胞比例增多，并出现较大的多极细胞，尤其集中于其与前置神经核过渡的区域附近。此过渡发生于舌下神经核吻侧端稍下方，该处细胞密度与体积均显著增加。
舌下周神经核群共同参与凝视稳定、空间定向以及头颈协调功能。
