Acetabular roof
Paries superior acetabuli
- Latin synonym: Tegmen acetabuli
- Synonym: Superior dome of acetabulum
Definition
The acetabular roof refers to the superior aspect of the acetabulum, which forms the main weight-bearing surface of the hip joint.
It is composed of the thickest portion of the lunate (articular) surface, which is covered by hyaline cartilage and is supported by underlying subchondral bone. The acetabular roof is formed primarily by the ilium, with contributions from the secondary ossification center of the os ilium during development, which increases superior coverage and depth of the acetabulum.
