Anal triangle

Trigonum anale

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The anal triangle is one of the two anatomical subdivisions of the perineum, the other being the urogenital triangle. The anal triangle is located posteriorly and is defined by the following boundaries:

1. Anteriorly: The line connecting the ischial tuberosities.

2. Laterally: The sacrotuberous ligaments.

3. Posteriorly: The tip of the coccyx.

The anal triangle contains the anus and the ischioanal fossae (fat-filled spaces located lateral to the anal canal, which allow for the expansion of the anal canal during defecation).
