Articular surface of arytenoid cartilage
Facies articularis cartilaginis arytenoideae
- Related terms: Articular surface; Articular surface (Arytenoid cartilage)
Definition
The articular surface of the arytenoid cartilage is located at the base of the arytenoid, where it articulates with the superior border of the cricoid cartilage to form the cricoarytenoid joint. This surface is typically oval or slightly concave in shape, allowing it to fit against the convex articular facet of the cricoid cartilage. The articular facet of the arytenoid is covered by hyaline cartilage and is broad, facilitating the joint's three degrees of movement: rocking, gliding, and limited rotation.
The articular capsule surrounding the joint is thin and reinforced posteriorly by the posterior cricoarytenoid ligament, which stabilizes the articulation.
The joint cavity is larger than the articular surfaces themselves, with peripheral recesses and synovial folds that accommodate the extensive mobility required for vocal fold movement.
