Basilar part of pons
Pars basilaris pontis
- Latin synonym: Pars ventralis pontis
- Related terms: Basal part of pons
Definition
The basilar part of pons constitutes the anterior (ventral) portion and is characterized by the following features:
Vertically running fibers; the corticopontine and corticospinal tracts, and
Transversely crossing fibers (i.e. the transverse pontine fibres) originating from the pontine nuclei, and projecting to the contralateral cerebellum via the middle cerebellar peduncle.
Its bulk is primarily attributed to the pontine nuclei and their connections to the corticopontocerebellar fibers.
