Central intermediate substance
Substantia intermedia centralis
Definition
The central intermediate substance consists of gray matter surrounding the central canal of the spinal cord and corresponds to Rexed lamina X. It is divided into dorsal and ventral commissures, located behind and in front of the central canal, respectively. These commissures connect the gray matter of the right and left halves of the spinal cord.
Laterally, the central intermediate substance transitions into the lateral intermediate substance, also known as the base of the posterior horn or lamina VII. This region is situated between the posterior and anterior horns of the spinal gray matter. Together, the central and lateral intermediate substances form the intermediate zone of the spinal cord.
