Fibrous joints of free lower limb
Juncturae fibrosae partis liberae membri inferioris
- Latin synonym: Juncturae fibrosae membri inferioris liberi
Definition
The fibrous joints of the free lower limb are the distal tibiofibular syndesmosisand the interosseous membrane of the leg.
The distal tibiofibular syndesmosis is a fibrous joint formed by the distal ends of the tibia and fibula, stabilized by the anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament, posterior inferior tibiofibular ligament, and the interosseous tibiofibular ligament.
The interosseous membrane, which extends between the shafts of the tibia and fibula, is also a fibrous joint (syndesmosis) and provides additional stability and separation between the anterior and posterior compartments of the leg.
No other fibrous joints are present in the free lower limb; the proximal tibiofibular joint is a synovial joint, not a fibrous one.
