Definition

The fibrous joints of the free lower limb are the distal tibiofibular syndesmosisand the interosseous membrane of the leg.

  • The distal tibiofibular syndesmosis is a fibrous joint formed by the distal ends of the tibia and fibula, stabilized by the anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament, posterior inferior tibiofibular ligament, and the interosseous tibiofibular ligament.

  • The interosseous membrane, which extends between the shafts of the tibia and fibula, is also a fibrous joint (syndesmosis) and provides additional stability and separation between the anterior and posterior compartments of the leg.

No other fibrous joints are present in the free lower limb; the proximal tibiofibular joint is a synovial joint, not a fibrous one.
