First metatarsal bone

Os primum metatarsi

  • Latin synonym: Os I metatarsi

Definition

There are 5 metatarsal bones in the foot, ordered from inner to outer. The first metatarsal bone corresponds to the big toe and is the shortest and thickest.

The first metatarsal bone, like the rest, consists of a head, a body or shaft, and a base. The head points distally towards the toes and connects with the proximal phalanx or the toe bone. The base is wedge-shaped, slanting from inner to outer and connects with the distal tarsal bone(s). The body (a.k.a. shaft), is elongated and situated between the head and the base.

On its inner side, the base of first metatarsal bone provides attachment to the tendon of the tibialis anterior muscle. The peroneus longus muscle from the outer leg crosses medially within the sole to insert into the base of the first metatarsal bone on its outer side. Like the other metatarsal bones, the shaft of the first metatarsal bone also serves as an attachment point for the interossei muscle.
