Glandular part of prostate

Pars glandularis prostatae

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The glandular part of the prostate is a term only referenced in the Terminologia Anatomica 2. It seems to refer to the glandular paired lobes of glandular tissue that constitute the bulk of the prostate gland, as originally described in the classical lobar classification system proposed by Lowsley. In this model, the prostate was divided into five lobes an anterior lobe, a posterior lobe, a middle lobe, and two lateral lobes based on embryological studies. The lateral lobes are the largest of these divisions and contain the majority of the secretory glandular tissue of the prostate, composed of ductal and acinar elements embedded within a fibromuscular stroma.

The classical lobar terminology has been largely superseded by McNeal's zonal anatomy model (1981), which divides the glandular prostate into three biologically and histologically distinct zones.
