Highest nasal concha

Concha suprema nasi

  • Latin synonym: Concha nasi suprema
  • Synonym: Highest nasal turbinate
  • Eponym: Concha Santorini

Definition

The highest nasal concha, a.k.a. the supreme nasal concha, represents the uppermost segment of the turbinate structures within the nasal cavity, though its presence is not universal. The occurrence of this anatomical feature is remarkably variable, with its presence reported in approximately 8% to 80% of individuals. It may manifest unilaterally, on one side, or bilaterally, on both sides of the nasal passage.

Originating from the medial aspect of the ethmoidal labyrinth, akin to the superior and middle conchae, the highest nasal concha is the smallest among the nasal conchae, resembling a diminutive ridge. It is situated superior to the superior nasal concha, nestled towards the posterior and upper portion of the lateral nasal wall. The highest nasal concha’s position at the top implies that it might have a role in the sense of smell, potentially enhancing it together with the superior nasal concha, both of which are covered by the olfactory neuroepithelium.
