The hilum of kidney is a deep longitudinal fissure located at the central part of the medial border, bounded by prominent overhanging anterior and posterior lips.

The hilum transmits the vessels, nerves, and ureter with relative positionin the hilum is as follows: the renal vein is in front, the renal artery in the middle, and the ureter behind and directed downward. Frequently, however, branches of both artery and vein are placed behind the ureter
