Interarytenoid fold

Plica interarytenoidea

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The interarytenoid fold is a mucosal fold located in the posterior larynx, spanning the space between the two arytenoid cartilages at the level of the posterior commissure. It overlies the interarytenoid muscle and forms the posterior boundary of the laryngeal inlet.

This fold is clinically significant as it can be involved in pathological conditions such as interarytenoid adhesions or scarring, which may mimic bilateral vocal cord paralysis and impact airway patency and voice function.

The interarytenoid fold is distinct from the aryepiglottic folds and is not described as having a ligamentous or muscular "skeleton" like the aryepiglottic fold.
