Os cuneiforme intermedium

  • Synonym: Second cuneiform, Cuneiform 2; Middle cuneiform bone
  • Related terms: Intermediate cuneiform; Middle cuneiform

Definition

There are 3 cuneiform bones in the tarsal region of the foot, all of which articulate posteriorly with the navicular bone. The intermediate cuneiform bone is the smallest of the three and is squeezed between the medial and lateral cuneiform bones. It connects distally with the base of the second metatarsal bone.

The intermediate cuneiform bone, along with the other two cuneiform bones (medial and lateral), receive slips from the tibialis posterior tendon on their plantar surfaces.
