Lateral rotation
Rotatio lateralis
- Latin synonym: Rotatio externa; Exorotatio
- Synonym: External rotation
- Related terms: Lateral rotation; External rotation
Definition
Lateral rotation is defined as the external rotation of the limb away from the midline. For instance, the lateral rotation at the hip joint can be brought about by externally rotating a fully extended lower limb, such that the big toe points outwards. The rotational movement occurs along the long axis of the lower limb. Similarly, when the arms are placed on the side of the chest and elbows flexed (as if holding a tray), then lateral rotation at the shoulder joint can be brought about by bringing the forearm and hand outwards. Here, the rotational movement occurs along the long axis of the humerus.
