Definition

The term “leptomeninges” refers to the pia mater and arachnoid mater together.

The arachnoid membrane is attached to the outer layer of meninges, called the dura mater. Between these two layers, there exists a potential space called the subdural space. Inside to the arachnoid is the subarachnoid space. Numerous thin web-like strands, called trabeculae, extend from the inner surface of the arachnoid membrane, spanning the subarachnoid space, and attaching to the pia mater. The pia mater is the vascular meningeal layer that covers the entire brain and follows its folds and grooves, known as sulci and gyri.
