Lingual septum

The lingual septum is a median vertical fibrous partition that extends through the tongue from the dorsum to the inferior surface (though not quire reaching the dorsum). It is composed of dense fibrous connective tissue and divides the tongue into right and left halves. The lingual septum is attached inferiorly to the body of the hyoid bone and serves as an important point of attachment for the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the tongue. Although it incompletely separates the muscular fibres of the two sides, it provides structural support and maintains the shape of the tongue during movement.
