Prefrontal artery

Arteria prefrontalis

Definition

The prefrontal artery is a branch of the superior trunk of the MCA (M2) that passes over the insula, then ascends along the inferior frontal gyrus and then loops and divides to the convexity (with a typical feature on angiography: "candelabra artery"). It's branches supply the inferior frontal gyrus (head and triangular part)  and the foot of the second and third frontal gyri.

The cortical area supplied by this artery (Michotey et al.) is the prefrontal area: the superior part of the pars orbitalis, the pars triangularis, the anterior part of the pars opercularis and most of the middle frontal gyrus.
