Skin sulci

Sulci cutis

Definition

Antoine Micheau

Skin sulci are the fine, shallow grooves or furrows found on the surface of the skin that form characteristic patterns. These linear depressions are created by the attachment of the dermis to underlying structures and are most prominently visible on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, where they form dermatoglyphic patterns (fingerprints, palm prints, and footprints). Skin sulci separate the elevated ridges of the skin surface and together create the unique topographic landscape of the integumentary system.
