Superior cavity of temporomandibular joint

Cavitas superior articulationis temporomandibularis

  • Latin synonym: Cavitas articularis superior
  • Synonym: Superior articular cavity; Superior joint cavity; Superior joint space

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The superior cavity of the temporomandibular joint is defined as the upper synovial compartment of the temporomandibular joint, located between the superior surface of the articular disc and the glenoid (articular) fossa and articular eminence of the temporal bone.

This cavity is separated from the inferior joint space by the articular disc, which divides the TMJ into two distinct compartments: the superior (upper) and inferior (lower) joint spaces. The superior cavity primarily facilitates translational movements of the mandibular condyle during jaw opening and closing, and contains synovial fluid that lubricates the joint surfaces.
