A symphysis is a type of cartilaginous joint where the bones are joined by fibrocartilage.

This joint allows for limited movement and provides strength and flexibility. A well-known example is the pubic symphysis, which is located between the left and right pubic bones. The pubic symphysis consists of a fibrocartilaginous disc that can resist tensile, shearing, and compressive forces, and it allows for a small amount of movement under physiological conditions. Another example is the mandibular symphysis, which can vary in its degree of fusion among different mammalian species and is influenced by factors such as diet and mechanical loading.
