Territory of lateral lenticulo-striate arteries (M1-segment of MCA)
Area arterie lenticulostrati lateralis
Definition
The lateral lenticulo-striate perforating arteries are branches of the horizontal M1-segment of the MCA and supply a well-defined area (the superior part of the head and the body of the caudate nucleus, most of the globus pallidus and putamen and the posterior limb of the internal capsule) which may be involved or spared in infarcts separately from the main cortical territory of the MCA.
Stroke pattern: Right-sided and left-sided infarct: contralateral pure upper-motor hemiparesis due to damage to the basal ganglia (globus pallidus and striatum) and the genu of the internal capsule on the left side. Larger infarcts extending to the cortex may produce cortical deficits such as aphasia.
