Definition
A lobe of the thyroid gland is one of the two major, lateral portions of the thyroid gland, typically referred to as the right and left lobes. Each lobe is located on either side of the trachea and is connected by a thin band of tissue called the isthmus. The lobes are composed of thyroid parenchyma, which contains numerous follicles responsible for thyroid hormone synthesis and secretion. The thyroid gland may also have a pyramidal lobe, which is an anatomical variant and considered an accessory lobe, but the term "lobe" in standard anatomical usage refers specifically to the right and left main portions of the gland.
