Tuberosity of distal phalanx of foot
Tuberositas phalangis distalis pedis
- Related terms: Tuberosity of distal phalanx
Definition
The tuberosity of the distal phalanx of the foot refers to the expanded, roughened area at the plantar aspect of the base of the distal phalanx. This anatomical feature is most prominent in the hallux (great toe) but is present in all toes. The tuberosity serves as the attachment site for the plantar pad and the flexor tendons, specifically the flexor hallucis longus in the hallux and the flexor digitorum longus in the lesser toes.
Radiographically, the tuberosity appears as a broad, dense region at the distal end of the phalanx, contributing to the contour and stability of the distal toe pad.
