Umbilical fissure

Fissura umbilicalis

  • Synonym: Left sagittal fossa; Left sagittal fissure

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The umbilical fissure is a long narrow groove in the visceral surface of liver, that runs parallely to the left side of the falciform ligament, following behind the fissure for the round ligament. The umbilical fissure separates the medial and lateral divisions of liver, forming a boundary for hepatic segmentation (projection on the surface of the liver of the left hepatic vein).

The term umbilical fissure could be homologous to the term "left sagittal fossa; left sagittal fossa fissure" (terme officialy not listed in the Terminologia Anatomica).
