Umbilical region

Regio umbilicalis

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The umbilical region is an anatomical region of the abdomen that surrounds the umbilicus (navel). It is centrally located and is one of the nine regions of the abdomen used in clinical practice to localize symptoms and signs. The umbilical region is bordered superiorly by the epigastric region, inferiorly by the hypogastric (or suprapubic) region, and laterally by the right and left lateral regions of abdomen (or flank) regions.

This region is clinically significant due to its association with various structures and potential pathologies. It contains parts of the small intestine, including the lower part of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum, as well as the transverse colon.
