Normal examination respiratory system by endoscopy: nasoendoscopy

Normal examination respiratory system by endoscopy: nasoendoscopy

Normal examination respiratory system by endoscopy: nasoendoscopy

Introduction

This e-Anatomy module illustrates the exploration of the upper airway (nasal cavity, pharynx and larynx) by endoscopy in a non-sedated patient.
There are many reasons for nasal fibroscopy, including airway inflammation and obstruction, exploration of masses, dysphagia, dysphonia and assessments of ENT tumor extension, especially prior to radiation therapy. Nasal endoscopy is usually performed without sedation, which makes it possible to complete the morphological study of the structures with a dynamic evaluation of the mobility of the vocal folds during phonation or an abnormality of the pharyngeal phase during swallowing (elevation and contraction of the soft palate, tilting of the epiglottis, etc.).

This module is particularly intended for medical students, interns or any physician with a detailed interest in the anatomy of the upper respiratory tract.

Material and methods

This examination of the nasal cavity was conducted by Thibault Kennel M.D. (ENT Surgeon - Montpellier, France) on a healthy volunteer.
The images were labeled by Stephan Mahler, Veterinary Anatomist, under the anatomical and scientific supervision of Antoine Micheau M.D. and Denis Hoa M.D. (Radiologists - Montpellier, France).

The anatomical structures were labeled, based on the Terminologia Anatomica 2 and grouped into the following themes:

  • General anatomy
  • Nose
    • External nose
    • Nasal septum
    • Lateral well of nasal cavity
    • Nasal cavity
  • Nasopharynx
  • Tongue
  • Oropharynx
  • Laryngopharynx
  • Larynx
