由于上颌中切牙比下颌中切牙宽，上牙弓中的其余牙齿略向远中移位，因此当口腔闭合时，上下两列牙齿并不完全对应：上颌尖牙部分覆盖下颌尖牙，部分覆盖第一前磨牙；上颌磨牙的牙尖位于下颌磨牙相应牙尖的后方。
然而，两列牙弓在后方的终止位置大致相同；这主要是由于上牙弓中的磨牙相对较小所致。
