Acetabular labrum

Labrum acetabuli

  • Synonym: Glenoid labrum of hip

Definition

The fibrocartilaginous rim attached to the margins of the acetabulum is called the acetabular labrum. The cup-shaped acetabular socket is deep and hemispherical, situated on the lateral surface of the hip bone, and it articulates with the head of the femur to form the hip joint.

The acetabular labrum has a crucial function in deepening the acetabular cavity, thus limiting the extreme range of motion at the hip joint and providing stability to the joint.
