  • Related terms: Anterior branch; Anterior branch (Obturator nerve)

Definition

Muhammad A. Javaid

The anterior branch of obturator nerve originates from the main trunk of the obturator nerve within the obturator canal and enters the medial compartment of the thigh.

Course

The anterior branch runs on the anterior surface of the adductor brevis muscle, positioned between the adductor longus and adductor brevis muscles, behind the pectineus muscle.

Innervation

a) Motor

Muscular branches from the anterior branch of obturator nerve supply the adductor longus (L2-L4), adductor brevis (L2-L3), gracilis (L2-L3), and pectineus (L2-L3, with possible contribution from the femoral nerve). This branch primarily facilitates hip adduction.

b) Sensory

Provides cutaneous branches to the medial thigh and articular branches to the hip joint.
