Anterior triangle of neck
Trigonum anterius colli
- Latin synonym: Trigonum cervicale anterius
- Synonym: Anterior cervical triangle
Definition
The anterior triangle of the neck is an anatomical region bounded laterally by the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, medially by the midline of the neck, and superiorly by the inferior border of the mandible. Its apex is at the jugular notch of the manubrium, and its base is formed by the lower border of the mandible. This triangle is subdivided into smaller triangles: the submental, submandibular (digastric), carotid, and muscular triangles. The anterior triangle contains important structures including the carotid arteries, internal jugular vein, cranial nerves, and several lymph node groups.
