Anterolateral part of peritoneum

Pars anterolateralis peritonei

  • Synonym: Anterolateral abdominal part of parietal peritoneum

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The anterolateral part of the peritoneum refers to the portion of the parietal peritoneum that lines the inner surface of the anterior and lateral abdominal walls. It is a component of the larger peritoneal membrane.

It lines the deep (posterior) surface of the anterior abdominal wall musculature posterior to the rectus abdominis, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis muscles and extends laterally along the flanks to the paracolic gutters. It is separated from the musculofascial abdominal wall by the transversalis fascia and a layer of preperitoneal (extraperitoneal) fat.
